Joseph Takes The Bijou For A Moonlight Mile

On the evening of March 3, up-and-coming band Joseph made their next stop on their Spring tour at the Bijou Theatre. Natalie Closner Schepman, Meegan and Allison Closner grew up in Portland, Oregon, but named the band after the town Joseph, Oregon where their grandfather was from. The intimate venue could not have been more perfect for this trio of sisters. They started making music together when Natalie’s solo career was in search of a creative boost. Since then Joseph has released two studio albums, toured nationwide and will be making appearances at festivals such as Coachella and Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.

The energy in the historic theatre was filled with anticipation. To further enhance a Friday night at the Bijou, one should most definitely stop at the bar for a fine beverage. The featured cocktail for the night, named after Joseph’s tune, was the “White Flag,” which consisted of vodka, sweetened lime juice and a lime. After one has been properly serviced with a beverage of choice, it was time to take a seat.

Once Joseph took that stage all attention was on them, and I really mean it. Not a phone was in sight. Their harmonies were so captivating, they immersed the entire crowd in the moment. There was something special about how these sisters sang together that could make a person’s hair stand on end. These girls aren’t just some hipster indie girls from Oregon, they are genuine, raw and completely authentic. They sang a variety of songs from both studio albums. They performed a mixture of high energy and mellow tunes that made it impossible not to fall in love with their band. Joseph was joined by Kelsey Kopecky for a unique cover of Ariana Grande’s “Dangerous Woman.” In case that didn’t give you your cover fix, they also sang a phenomenal cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Moonlight Mile.” The show rounded out with the hauntingly beautiful lullaby “Sweet Dreams.”

I was a big fan of this band before catching them live, and I knew Joseph would be a band to keep an eye on. After seeing Joseph live I am positive that once the world experiences their compelling harmonies people won’t be able to get enough of them. All that being said, make sure to check out their most recent album, I’m Alone, No You’re Not, and if you see that Joseph is playing in a city or festival near you, GO SEE THEM.
